John Randolph of Roanoke on Henry Clay


Mr. Clay took his seat in the House of Representatives in December, 1811; his first stride was from the door to [Speaker's] chair, where he commenced to play the dictator; he fixed his eyes on the presidency, and I, who had been twelve years in Congress, fixed mine upon him, and have kept them there ever since. Sulla said that he saw many a Marius in Caesar.
